This horse and rider re-enactment (wiki) business can be expensive.

In her article, The cost of … re-enacting a war,” Tamar Fleishman writes, “Taking part in historical re-enactments has become a fast-growing pastime. Although the battles are now make-believe, the competition at the higher levels of the hobby can be real, as re-enactment groups try to out-authentic their peers. That means more research, better reproduction gear―and more modern dollars spent chasing the look of the past.”

A history enthusiast dressed as a soldier rides his horse past a burning house during the re-enactment of Napoleon's famous battle of Austerlitz.

Last weekend, a bunch of history enthusiasts dressed as soldiers and rode their horses during a re-enactment of Napoleon’s famous battle of Austerlitz, in Slavkov, near the southern Moravian City of Brno, Czech Republic (wiki). Over 3,800 history enthusiasts participated in the battle reenactment to mark its 200th anniversary.

People watch a horse fight during a festival in Rongshui Miao Ethnic Group Autonomous County, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on November 26, 2005. The festival was also a show for local agricultural products.

The festivities also include beating drums, dancing to the music of a lusheng (a wind instrument), horse racing and bull-fighting. In an earlier post, I wrote about the adoption of the Przewalski horse by the Xinjiang Wild Animal Protection Association in China.

What gives?

And I thought that living in New Mexico, one of the two states in the United States where cock fighting is allowed, was pretty bad.
