Little Banty Rooster

cool flickr photo by hljscj

Banty is short for Bantam. The old folks back in the day just always call Bantam Roosters, "banty" roosters.

In addition this term is used to describe the behavior of some short men who may tend to walk with a swagger and adopt a somewhat exaggerated male posture. They are called banty roosters after the bantam rooster both because of their size and because their behavior can "out-rooster" the more standard sized rooster.

This may be the cold medicine talking. But I'm on a roll with this chicken theme.

Spotted around these parts recently. The dad of one of my kid's friends who stood in the horse barn with me not so long ago as I was trying to explain to him what a good rider his kid has become, and he's braggin' and swaggerin' in his little Levis (possibly purchased from the boys department) and sprinkling his conversation with me with the word ... babe.

Yeah. Babe.

I did this, babe.

And then I did that.

Babe.

Blecht. I almost sicked the heelers on him.

Human banty roosters are not nearly as cute as the real ones.

I soooo get the picture. Yep, that's a banty rooster talking that "babe" stuff.

I think my Golden Retriever might even be up to contributing .. something.

You think you've got it bad with babe? I have a male friend who calls me 'girl' all the time. It makes me feel like im 8 years old. Granted I am only 18 and only recently out of girlhood but its still a bit sad.

There's also the term "peacocking" to describe this type of male behavior. Anyone familiar withe male peacocks will immediately recognize the similarity to a banty rooster...strutting around, puffing out their chests, desperately trying to attract some attention. Nope, I'm not anti-male....I just have a low tolerance for idiotic behavior.
