The Abuela.

This is the first Rio Grande cottonwood we planted several years ago on Mother's Day. She is over 30 feet tall now. We've planted 20 more and several more will go into the ground this year. My draft horse Toby has only gotten one of them so far. There's something about the rush of cottonwood leaves in the breeze that fills me up and satisfies more than the thin sound of the wind through the pine needles. I love to sit beneath her. Close my eyes. And listen.

Spring is coming slowly here in the Pecos.
